A Structured Pathway to Confident Reading
The Zarro Reading Stages provide a clear, research-based progression that guides students from learning letter sounds to becoming confident, fluent readers. Each stage builds intentionally on the previous one to ensure mastery, confidence, and long-term success.
🔹 Stage 1: Sound Saver
Building the Foundation
This is where reading begins.
Students learn the sounds associated with each letter of the alphabet and develop accurate pronunciation and articulation. This stage focuses on strengthening phonemic awareness — the essential building block of reading.
Students will:
• Learn letter–sound relationships
• Practice correct pronunciation
• Develop confidence in decoding unfamiliar words
• Build a strong foundation for spelling and reading
This stage creates confident beginners who understand how reading works.
🔹 Stage 2: Blend Master
Connecting Sounds to Words
At this stage, students begin combining sounds to form words. They move from isolated sounds to meaningful reading.
Students will:
• Practice blending individual sounds to read words
• Develop word recognition skills
• Improve reading fluency
• Learn strategies to decode new and unfamiliar words
• Strengthen comprehension by connecting sounds to meaning
Blend Master learners begin to see themselves as real readers.
🔹 Stage 3: Smooth Reader
Reading with Confidence and Understanding
This is where reading becomes natural and expressive.
Students move beyond decoding and begin reading smoothly, accurately, and with clear understanding. Fluency, comprehension, and confidence come together at this level.
Students will:
• Read sentences and short passages with ease
• Develop proper pacing, tone, and expression
• Improve reading speed and accuracy
• Strengthen comprehension skills
• Identify main ideas and supporting details
• Retell stories clearly and logically
• Expand vocabulary through context
Smooth Readers are confident, independent readers who enjoy reading and understand what they read.
